Course Outline

Working with Ex-Boarding School pupils can present unique challenges in the therapy room. This workshop blends TA with the work of Nick Duffell and Joy Schaverian to increase attendees’ awareness of the issues involved. We will also explore techniques to help these clients understand how their lives have been shaped by their childhood experiences.

Aim

Understand the cultural and psychological processes that lie behind the UK’s Boarding School culture.
Increase awareness of the transgenerational effects of Boarding School attendance. Use TA models to develop ways of supporting change suited to this client group. Improve attendees ability to form therapeutic relationships with ex-Boarding School pupils who often have difficulty trusting others.

Learning Outcomes

  • Be able to describe using TA models the likely processes inherent in the Boarding School experience
  • Be aware of the transgenerational nature of the process to assess whether this issue is relevant to the client and what this might mean for the Contracting process
  • Have an awareness of ‘Boarding School Syndrome’ as described by Duffel & Schaverian
