Working with ADHD Clients
in Counselling and Psychotherapy

6pm to 7pm, Thursday 12 November 2026

A free online workshop with Nea Clark

Introduction

Working with ADHD clients can bring new questions into the therapy room. Many counsellors and psychotherapists have trained in depth in their core modality and in trauma-informed practice, but have had fewer chances to explore how ADHD affects attention, emotional processing, sensory capacity, motivation, executive functioning, and a client's ability to use therapy between sessions.

That can leave experienced, thoughtful practitioners wondering how to adapt their work without losing their modality. It can also raise harder questions: what to do when insight alone isn't creating change, or how to support a client who understands what they need to do but struggles to begin, organise or follow through.

In this introductory workshop, psychotherapist, supervisor, author and ADHD specialist Nea Clark will introduce a neuro-informed mindset and how it can be applied within counselling and psychotherapy.

Keeping your own approach

A neuro-informed approach doesn't ask you to replace the way you work. Transactional analysis, CBT, person-centred, integrative, relational and other approaches can all be kept. What it offers is an additional frame for understanding capacity, behaviour, emotional responses and the practical difficulties ADHD clients face.

This remains therapeutic work. Alongside exploration, meaning-making and relational depth, you'll consider how to recognise when a client may also need practical scaffolding to help them manage everyday life.

What the workshop covers

Nea will introduce ten key areas:

  1. Understanding the neuro-informed mindset

  2. Recognising how ADHD may present in the therapy room

  3. Bringing neuro-informed and trauma-informed thinking together

  4. Working with sensory overwhelm and changing capacity

  5. Understanding emotional overload and emotional processing

  6. Exploring attention, motivation and task initiation

  7. Working with procrastination without reinforcing shame

  8. Identifying executive function difficulties

  9. Understanding masking, limiting beliefs and shame

  10. Building practical scaffolding while maintaining therapeutic depth

What you'll take away

The aim is to help you feel more confident, more structured and less alone when working with ADHD. You'll leave with a clearer way of understanding what may be happening for your client, questions you can bring into your sessions, and practical ideas you can build into your existing way of working.

Who it's for

Psychotherapists, counsellors, trainees and other practitioners who would like a clearer understanding of how ADHD may appear in the therapy room. The session is practical and psychoeducational.
