TA Deep Dive 7/10: Undeveloped Self Model a way of understanding trauma in 3rd order structure

Who is it aimed at

Psychotherapy trainees and TA Qualified Practitioners.

Workshop Outline

In this workshop we will explore ‘developmental trauma’, and how this can show up in our clients. We will use the ‘undeveloped self model’ (Hargaden and Sills, 2002; pg 25), as a key way of plotting trauma in a 3rd order structure.

We will also explore how this can be used alongside other TA models such as Trautmann & Erskine’s ‘Relation Needs’ (1996), Lee’s (1998) ‘The Drowning Person’, and O'Reilly-Knapp & Erskine’s ‘Script System’ (2003), to support treatment direction.

We will explore how child development (Thunnissen, 1998) can be mapped onto ego state development, and how trauma and impact on this growth. Throughout this workshop we will be considering how we can use this model in our client work.

Aims

The aim of this training is to give an in-depth understanding of the ‘undeveloped self model’, how it relates to other TA models, as well as to childhood developmental trauma. This is with the aim of supporting the participants to feel confident to use this as a diagnostic tool in their work.

Learning Outcomes

Participants from this course should have a good understanding of the undeveloped self model, and how it sits alongside other TA models.

The Participants should feel confident in using this model in their practice to understand and treat childhood developmental trauma.

Ben is a psychotherapist based in York, previously a social worker for over 10 years, Ben started his private practice ‘Flux Therapy’ in 2019.
