Who is it aimed at?

This course is aimed primarily at counsellors and psychotherapists.  It is also suitable for counselling students who are ready to start their practice, and a wide range of healthcare professionals.

A basic knowledge of TA would be useful in attending this workshop, although it is not essential.

Course Outline

This is going to be an exciting, stimulating, interactive day, where we will explore the issues involved in working with clients who self-harm. We will look at a number of theories to support us in how we think about and work with clients who self-harm.

At the end of the day participants will go away with a deeper understanding of the issues around self-harm, particularly behaviours resulting from states of extreme distress linked to trauma.

Aims

The aim of this workshop is to increase your confidence in identifying and managing the issues around self-harm and suicide in practice with clients, whilst equipping you to work effectively with clients who are severely distressed.

Learning Outcomes

This workshop will provide you with:

  • an understanding as to why some clients self-harm;
  • theories aimed at deepening your knowledge as to why some clients self-harm, and how to work with this issue in the therapy room;
  • appropriate treatment strategies and treatment plans in working with clients who self-harm;
  • links between self-harm and suicide;
  • useful tools and resources to enable you to work effectively in supporting your clients to develop healthy alternatives to self-harm;
  • issues related to self care for practitioners who work with severely distressed clients.

Course Structure

This workshop will involve teaching, exploration and interaction, using both a theoretical and practical framework. It will include small group work, exercises and skills practice.
