Introduction to Counselling Skills

This is a three day standalone course to introduce the basics of counselling skills.

Whilst it is a pre-requisite for those entering the Foundation Year programme, it is open to all and recommended for anyone considering counselling and psychotherapy training. The primary aim of the course is for participants to understand the theoretical base for core counselling skills through experiential learning and to be able to relate these concepts to Transactional Analysis practice. The course is offered by Physis Scotland as a stand alone course and/or as a component part of training that meets COSCA’s requirement for counselling skills training as a pre-requisite to entering the Physis Scotland COSCA Diploma course.

On completion of the three day course participants will:

  • understand the core concepts that underpin counselling skills
  • be able to apply skills in practice within a developmental framework
  • relate skills to the practice of TA

have practiced and developed skills in:

  • active listening
  • responding reflectively
  • summarising
  • open and closed questioning
  • appropriate self disclosure
  • immediacy
  • responding to blocks to contact
  • recognising boundaries
  • confrontation and challenge
  • empathy
  • working with resistance

Tutor Biographies

Fiona Cook is a Certified Transactional Analyst and UKCP Registered Psychotherapist and has a small private practice in Edinburgh.

She has a background in the NHS as a Registered Nurse Teacher and Facilitator and also owns a successful freelance practice development consultancy business, (smallchangeBIGDIFFERENCE), using TA, working with healthcare agencies across the UK and more recently in Australia in this capacity.

She is passionate about TA and having a TA presence in Scotland, and uses her knowledge and experience in all aspects of her work with clients as a facilitator of personal change, transformation and enhanced autonomy.

Fiona works with Fiona Firman to organise TA101 workshops, and coordinates the recruitment process for new Foundation Year Trainees. Together they organise delivery of the Foundation Year programme and act as the contact points for all new enquiries about training.

Fiona was a founder member of the STAA.

Fiona Firman, BA (Hons), PG Dip (TA Counselling), MSc (Psych), CTA (P), PTSTA is a psychotherapist, supervisor and trainer based in Edinburgh, where she runs a private practice. Fiona is currently the Training and Development Lead at Physis Scotland in Edinburgh.

Fiona has extensive experience in working with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse within the voluntary and statutory sectors, as well as in private practice.

Fiona has a special interest in working with clients who present with a Borderline process, and/or have a formal diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder.
